Stage Directing

Assistant stage directors will assist PSN directing faculty on our fully staged productions of Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Mozart’s Don Giovanni with orchestra, directed and coached by PSN faculty

Assistant directors will have the opportunity to shadow one of our professional stage directors in all staging rehearsals for their assigned Opera. In addition they will have the opportunity to direct at least one scene in the Opera Scenes program & concert, which will include scenes from important Czech operas such as Rusalka and Prodaná nevěsta (The Bartered Bride).

Duties may include:

  • Acting as a liaison between singers, stage director and festival administration.
  • Attending and assisting in all staging rehearsals, taking important notes (for example on blocking and technical needs).
  • Assisting in coordinating set changes during rehearsals.
  • Coordinating with the prop-master at Estates Theatre to arrange props for rehearsals.
  • Assisting with recording any important technical and lighting cues.
  • May have the opportunity to call the show in dress rehearsals.
  • Coordinating supertitles with the Estates Theatre and supertitles operator.

Program Highlights

  • Shadow and be mentored by a PSN stage director on your assigned opera
  • Participate in all staging rehearsals as assigned
  • Directing at least one scene in the opera scenes performance
  • Assist with stage manager duties in the Estates Theatre, one of Europe’s most renowned opera houses
  • Upon request: Performance preparation, resume building, social media and networking
